At Savile Park Primary we enrich the curriculum for our children by offering a range of educational visits and other activities that add to and complement what they learn in school. There are also a number of people who visit the school to support our work. Some visits relate directly to areas of learning for individual classes, whilst others relate to all our children.
Summer Term 2018
The children have been finding out how the Ancient Egyptians prepared their dead for the afterlife by taking part in a step by step mummification and handling real Ancient Egyptian burial goods. They also looked at artefacts, deciphered hieroglyphics and solved a mummy mystery to find out more about what life was like in Ancient Eygpt.
Spring Term 2018
On Thursday 27th March Year 3 hosted a Fairtrade café for the rest of the school to complete their topic on Fairtrade. They made their own products to sell including banana, lemon and chocolate buns, brownies and flapjack. They worked together as a year group to promote their café and sell the products. On the day the children managed to raise £98 which they will be donating to the Fairtrade Foundation. They had a really fun day and enjoyed taking part.
As artists and designers we have been looking at different moving mechanisms such as gears, levers and pulleys. We used these to then design a moving robot. We also designed our own robot to use in school to carry out a daily task.
On Monday 15th January children from Year 3 took part in a Riveting Robots launch day for their topic about robots. The children participated in three activities throughout the day from creating a timeline of robot history, to building robots out of recycled materials to programming real life robots. All the children enjoyed the day and particularly liked using modern computer technology to programme their Lego Mindstorms into doing dances.
